Time Management Tips for Working at Home

I need time management help!  I'll admit it.

Summer is over, kids are back in school and I should be getting more done, at least in those hours when they are out of the house.  But I feel like I'm spinning my wheels most days.  So I went hunting for some expert advice and here's what I found that might actually be helpful:

  1. Hire a babysitter.   eek Oh no, you think.  I work at home so I can BE with my children, they are the most important thing, etc.  The reality is that being a Mom is a full-time, 24/7 job and if you don't set aside some time to focus on work, you might as well give up on the idea of working.  When my kids were much smaller, I paid a sitter to come to the house for 4 hours a day during the summer and it was the best investment I made in my business.
  2. Don't Get Distracted Online.  Yeah, OK.  This is a big one for me.  A quick peek at Facebook turns into an hour of following up and responding, leading to a great sale which leads me to research prices which leads to... you get the idea!  Saving social and entertainment browsing for the END of the workday instead of the beginning can have a real impact on what you get done.
  3. Set a Schedule.  Wow, this is so hard to do, for me.  I believe in it, I think it is definitely the way to go and I can't tell you how many times I've started out with a strong schedule.  8:00-9:00- clean and straighten, 9:00-9:30- answer emails, 9:30-10:30- prepare newsletter, etc.  I tend to work on what interests me at the time and have a hard time stopping because the clock says it's time to do something else.  But sticking to that schedule can force more productivity into your day and is well worth the effort.
  4. Group Similar Activities.  This seems obvious when it comes to running errands and I naturally group my groceries, mail and bank stops into the same time slots, but I don't always think about it when it comes to things like checking email.  Instead of checking email a few times an hour, do it at the start and end of your day ONLY.

What are your best time management tips for working moms?

Ideas are worth nothing unless executed

I also think that its important that moms (or dads for that matter) get out into public places.  Its so easy to sit at home and get so consumed in my work that before I know it, my kids are home and I am chained to their social schedule.  I think it can make you resent working from home if you spend 24/7 only in your home.

I recently made a standing "date" with another work-at-home mother to meet on Tuesdays at a local restaurant that has wi-fi.  We will go share a cup of coffee and trials and tribulations of our businesses.  The half-a-day getaway allows me to keep working but to have some additional adult conversation out of the house and actually motivates me to work harder.

Re: Time Management Tips for Working at Home

I have a business friend across town and usually, we get together once a month for lunch.  We talk about personal stuff, catch up and then we generally talk about whatever projects we have going on.

I always come away from those lunches with a renewed sense of motivation to complete the things I've just talked about.  It's not even that she has any specific advice for me, she just listens to me.  And talking about the projects floating around on the margins of my day really brings them back into focus for me.

I highly recommend getting out of the house and talking with friends!  It can also help offset the feelings of isolation that set in after a while of being at home.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Let me tell you, it's harder than it looks.

You know, you think that if you didn't have the 9-5 constraints that you'd get SOOOOO much done.  In reality, I don't know where my time goes and it's hard to feel like you have accomplished anything on some days.

I've gone back to my old Franklin Planner - PAPER- and started doing the whole program.  You take time in the morning to write out everything that needs to be done, then you force rank those tasks by the most important to the least important.  Then, the most important thing, you have to do them in order.  That keeps me from doing all the easy stuff first and leaving the hard stuff for later, where it just never gets done.

It's not perfect (cause I'm not perfect at it) but it does help.  I think they have electronic calendars that can do the same thing, but having it written out seems to make it more real to me.

Keeping up with my little monster is fun.
